Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has confirmed that French striker Anthony Martial does indeed still have a future at Old Trafford despite a disappointing first season under the former Ajax boss.

Martial has suffered with his fair share of injuries since arriving in Manchester in 2015, and has managed just 12 appearances in the Premier League so far this campaign, with the 26-year-old still failing to hit the heights that were expected of him when he made the switch from Monaco to the Red Devils.

Out of contract in 2024 as it stands, the club have an option to extend his deal by a further year should they wish, though it is unclear as to whether they will take it up or not yet.

United are expected to be in the market for a striker this summer irrespective of Martial’s future, with Wout Weghorst returning to Burnley after his loan spell expires and unlikely to become a permanent member of Ten Hag’s squad.

Linked with the likes of Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen and Randal Kolo-Muani, any big-money addition would once again push Martial down the pecking order, but Ten Hag remains keen on keeping the Frenchman in the north west.

Asked if Martial will still be a Manchester United player next season, he was quick to jump to his striker’s defence.

“He’s a great player – he definitely has the qualities to play in top football – and when he is fit our team plays better”.

With Marcus Rashford sidelined for the next few weeks with injury, Martial is expected to be required to lead the line against Nottingham Forest and in the second leg of their Europa League clash against Sevilla, with the tie finely poised at 2-2.
