Portugal headed into the match as favourites to advance. And when all was said and done, Fernando Santos’ side did so with ease.

The headlines pre-match revolved around Cristiano Ronaldo being left on the bench vs Switzerland.

Ronaldo had previously not been left out of the XI at major competitions since all the way back in 2008.

However, during the game, the talk shifted swiftly to Goncalo Ramos.

The 21-year-old made just his 4th appearance and second start for Portugal on Tuesday.

Despite this, he scored their opener to overtake Ronaldo for goals in the knockout stages of the World Cup.

After scoring his third vs Switzerland, a number of impressive stats have emerged surrounding Ramos.

First up, it was revealed that Goncalo Ramos is the first player to score a hat-trick on his first World Cup start since Miroslav Klose for Germany in 2002.

Elsewhere, it was confirmed that Goncalo Ramos is the youngest man to score a hat trick in a FIFA World Cup knock-out match after Pele.

And finally, Ramos is the first man to score a hat-trick in a World Cup knockout stage game since Tomáš Skuhravý against Costa Rica in 1990.
