Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski broke his own impressive record during Barcelona’s La Liga opener, where the Blaugrana were held to a 0-0 draw with lowly Rayo Vallecano.

The Polish forward joined the Spanish club in a big-money move after a series of sensational seasons in the Bundesliga, where he had scored 312 goals in 375 appearances.

And he was chosen to lead the line for Xavi in Barcelona’s season curtain-raiser, part of a fearsome-looking attack that also included Ousmane Dembele and new signing Raphinha. He was one of four new additions to feature, though Jules Kounde is yet to be registered as a result of financial issues.

But they could not break down a stubborn Vallecano despite numerous chances and a goal ruled out for offside, dominating the game until Sergio Busquets’ sending off in second-half injury time.

The stalemate meant that Barcelona went three league games without scoring for the first time in 19 years, while there was also a personal record broken for Lewa himself.

Lewa draws rare blank

Though Lewandowski did find the back of the net before seeing it ruled out for offside, his failure to score meant that for the first time in 8 seasons, he has not opened his scoring account on the opening day of the season.

Barca and their fans will be hoping that the 33-year-old can open his account for the club sooner rather than later, especially given the potential departure of Memphis Depay and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer, which could leave Lewandowski as the only recognised forward option.
