The final England squad ahead of the World Cup has been announced and there are some eyebrow-raising selections from Gareth Southgate.

Southgate’s men are due to face Italy and Germany at the end of the month in the Nations League.

This is a hugely significant squad with players having their final opportunities to impress for the Three Lions ahead of this winter’s tournament.

101 Great Goals takes a look at the winners and losers from the latest squad…

The winners

1. Ivan Toney

Ivan Toney has received his first England call-up following a hugely impressive start to the season.

The striker has netted five goals for Brentford in the league this season making him the league’s joint-third top scorer.

2. Jarrod Bowen

Jarrod Bowen can count himself very fortunate to be in the latest England squad.

It has been a slow start to the season for the winger.

He is yet to open his goal-scoring account in the league.

Meanwhile, he has been a part of an underwhelming West Ham team.

3. Eric Dier

Eric Dier finally makes his long-awaited return to the England squad.

This is the 28-year-old’s first England call-up since November 2020.

The defender has thrived under Antonio Conte and in his three-back system.

Southgate uses a similar set-up for England and he is likely going to be competing for Harry Maguire’s place.

4. Kalvin Phillips

Kalvin Phillips can count himself lucky to be named in the England squad again.

It has been a tricky start to life at the Etihad for the former Leeds United man who has struggled for game time.

Despite being key for England at Euro 2020, the midfielder has played just 14 minutes so far this season.

He’s managed to make his way into the squad ahead of Jordan Henderson.

The losers

1. Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho’s omission is certainly a surprise given how well he has played under Erik ten Hag.

The forward has looked good under Man United’s new boss netting crucial goals against Leicester City and Liverpool.

But he misses out with Sterling, Saka, Foden, Bowen and Grealish all getting the nod ahead of him.

His clubmate Marcus Rashford also misses out, however, this is simply due to injury.

2. Jordan Henderson

England’s vice-captain has now failed to make back-to-back squads.

Jordan Henderson was also left out of the last England squad with Southgate claiming he was just resting him.

But given his poor start to the season, it appears as though other options are just clearly preferred.

England’s midfielders include Bellingham, Rice, Phillips, Mount and Ward-Prowse.

3. Ben White

This is a strange omission from Southgate with Ben White not really putting a foot wrong this season.

The defender has been filling in at right-back and has done a very good job for a strong Arsenal side.

He has started in all six of the Gunners’ league matches, five of which were wins.
