Costa Rica and Germany have a fighting chance to get out of their group this Thursday evening at the Qatar World Cup in what has rapidly become the most chaotic group at the competition with every team still able to qualify and head home.
Spain are looking the most likely to finish top of the group after a 7-0 win over Costa Rica puts their goals difference way ahead of the rest. A 1-1 draw with Germany also helps their head to head record, and with Costa Rica getting a late winner against Japan, it’s now Germany who face the pressure.
The Germans are going to need to win here to qualify and hope that Spain beat Japan. Should Japan defeat Spain and Germany beat Costa Rica, the four-time world champions may still head home because of their inferior goals difference over Spain and maybe Japan too.
Germany did look much better against Spain, however. Defensively, they restricted the 2010 World Cup winners to just three shots on target compared to the four of their own and it was Niclas Fullkrug who continued his goalscoring brilliance for the season with an equaliser late on.
Costa Rica were not at their best against Japan, despite a 1-0 win. It was Keysher Fuller who scored a delightful curled effort with nine minutes to spare that day and if they are to qualify, a draw could be all that is needed, if Spain can beat Japan.
