Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has claimed that Frank Lampard’s return to Stamford Bridge was exactly what the club needed, despite his side having lost all three of their games since his arrival.

The Blues parted ways with Graham Potter after just seven months at the helm, with the ex-Brighton man having led them to 11th in the Premier League.

They have since appointed former failed manager and club legend Frank Lampard to the role, two years after he was sacked in favour of Thomas Tuchel, in what is an interim role until the end of the season.

But their hunt for a permanent boss is continuing, with Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann among the candidates to be interviewed for the job in the coming weeks.

Lampard has got off to a rocky start, with Chelsea scoring one goal in his three games in charge and losing all three, including a hammering at the hands of Brighton despite the 2-1 scoreline.

Despite this, however, summer arrival Wesley Fofana has backed the interim boss, revealing that he believes his plan to get back to basics is a massive boost.

“He’s a club legend. He told us to get our confidence back, and play simple football again. To get back to the basics, really. His words moved us all, because it’s what we needed, to get our confidence back. And to realise that we’re fighting for a club. We’re fighting for a great club.”

Chelsea welcome Real Madrid to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, knowing that they need to find at least two goals to have any chance of progressing to the semi-final of the competition.
