Liverpool are ready to part ways with a mammoth 13 players as they look to overhaul Jurgen Klopp’s squad ahead of the new season, it has emerged.
The Reds have had a season to forget so far, with last season’s runners up currently 8th in the Premier League and in danger of missing out on European football altogether should results not go their way in the final stretch of the campaign.
Klopp’s side are expected to strengthen significantly this summer, with the German boss already having confirmed that plenty will be moving on in order to allow new faces to come in.
“The players we brought in last couple of transfer windows, Luis, Darwin and Cody, players in the first line. Sadio, Bobby and Mo were for a while best front line in football. Mo is now left pretty much, and Diogo [Jota] came in as well in that time. That’s investment.
“This same kind [of future investment] needs to happen next”, he added.
Who could go?
According to the Daily Express, as many as 13 players could depart Anfield this summer.
Artur Melo’s loan deal will run out, and there is no intention to activate his £37.5m option to buy. Third choice goalkeeper Adrian is also set to leave, and question marks hang over second-choice Caohmin Kelleher, who is keen for more first choice football and could fetch a handsome fee after starring in Liverpool’s cup wins last season.
Backup options Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Kostas Tsimikas could all face the chop too should there be interest in signing them, with Klopp keen to overhaul his defence as much as his midfield this summer, and the trio could well help bolster the club’s finances in what is set to be busy summer.
Also on the departures list are Nat Phillips, Rhys Williams and Sepp van den Berg, with none of the trio having made any impact this season and the latter two having spent time out on loan this campaign.
