Rashford’s form had been fairly poor for several years up until the 2022/23 season.
However, he returned to form under Erik ten Hag, just in time to grab a spot in Gareth Southgate’s 2022 World Cup squad.
England played their first game of the competition on Monday, smashing Iran 6-2.
Rashford did not start the game but he did come off the bench to score a brilliant goal, chopping inside before calmly smashing goalward.
Following that game, former England striker Emile Heskey has backed Rashford to become a no.9 for England:
“England don’t just have Harry Kane and Callum Wilson as their main strikers, they also have Marcus Rashford who can play in that position, albeit a different type of striker,” he told Paddy Power.
“Callum Wilson provides something different to Harry Kane, whereby he’ll run in behind the defence as an alternative option. There will be a lot of pressure on Harry Kane to stay fit and play every minute in the tournament.”
