Newcastle kicked off 3rd in the Premier League, three points above 5th place Liverpool.
However, the Magpies had two games in hand on Liverpool, one of them coming vs Arsenal.
Mikel Arteta’s side, meanwhile, were four points off league leaders Manchester City having both played 34 games this season.
So even with a win over Newcastle, they would still be one point adrift having played a game more.
At the time of writing, Arsenal are leading.
Newcastle had a very bright start to the match with Jacob Murphy hitting the post after a minute. Alexander Isak saw a good effort blocked less than a minute later.
Arsenal then took the lead in the tie after 14 minutes via a long-range Martin Odegaard strike.
Following that goal, it has been revealed that Martin Odegaard has now scored 15 Premier League goals this season, the joint-most by an Arsenal midfielder in a single campaign alongside Cesc Fabregas (2009/10).
