An update on the wellbeing of Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has come to the fore late on Saturday evening.

This comes, for those who missed it, after the Dutchman was forced into a premature departure from Barca’s La Liga showdown with Celta Vigo.

Xavi Hernandez’s troops, for their part, marched on to an eventual three point-haul, courtesy of the most remarkable of late comebacks.

De Jong, though, lasted just 35 minutes, before being hauled off.

After pulling up in evident pain with what appeared to be an ankle problem, it quickly became clear that the former Ajax man was in no condition to continue.

Gavi, in turn, was introduced in his place, sparking immediate concern surrounding an incoming spell on the sidelines for De Jong.

The info comes by way of Barcelona themselves, who have confirmed that De Jong has picked up a right ankle sprain. He is therefore labelled simply as ‘out’, with the Dutch international’s recovery set to ‘determine his availability’:

‘Tests carried out have shown that Frenkie de Jong has a high right ankle sprain. He is out and his recovery will determine his availability.’
