Chelsea face off with Southampton at 7:45 pm UK time on Tuesday evening in their first midweek outing of the campaign.

The Blues head into the Premier League tie looking to build on their 2-1 win over Leicester. Chelsea went a man down after less than 30 minutes of that game but still held out for three points.

Southampton, meanwhile, kick off at the Bridge 13th in the Premier League having picked up one win from four so far this term.

As a result, a Chelsea victory does seem very likely this weekend. Ahead of the game, Thomas Tuchel discussed a number of topics in his press conference on Monday afternoon.

On the transfer front, Tuchel suggested he is hopeful of adding some more players before the window shuts: “Right now, I think we could need some more players in some positions, but it’s very close to the end of the transfer window, and when September 1 comes, I will be a happy coach no matter what happens. I will try to find solutions and not think about what might have happened or what could be.”

The German also suggested Chelsea have a midfield headache ahead of Southampton as Conor Gallagher is suspended, N’Golo Kante is injured and Mateo Kovacic is unable to play a full game:

“The headache before the season was whether we had too many players there, but it comes to the fifth game, and maybe we only have two left with experience in this position and Kova from the bench because he is not ready to play full matches at Premier League level as he only had a week after training after his injury.

“It’s a strange situation and a situation we don’t like. I don’t know why we are in this situation, actually. It’s like this, and we will have something to think about [over the team selection], or maybe not because it’s so obvious who we have left.”
