Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has refused to rule out further business this January, but has warned that it has to be a deal done on the right finances for the club, effectively ruling out joining the race for Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

The Reds have already added PSV forward Cody Gakpo to their ranks this winter, agreeing an initial £37m deal with add ons that could take it to £45m, and the dutch attacker was at Anfield during his new side’s nervy 2-1 win over Leicester City.

Pressing questions remain over the Reds midfield, however, with Klopp’s side looking off the pace in the centre of the pitch so far this season. All of James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Thiago are the wrong side of 30 years-old, while Fabinho has looked a shadow of his former self in the campaign to date.

And Klopp has not shut the door on new signings, with the club linked to moves for Jude Bellingham and Enzo Fernandez as well as a host of more moderately-priced options including World Cup star Sofyan Amrabat, but the German warned that funds at Anfield were not unlimited as they have appeared to be at other clubs in recent years.

“I am now seven years and a few months here and every transfer window is pretty much the same,” the Liverpool boss explained. “We talk about these things as though money wouldn’t play a role. Like, ‘Who cares’.

“If there’s something we can do in January which means right player & financial situation…then we will do it, but if not then we will not”.
