Manchester United are reportedly demanding a massive £50m for club captain and England regular Harry Maguire as they look to raise funds for their own summer transfers.
The Red Devils have already signed compatriot Mason Mount in a deal worth £55m, and are closing in on a deal for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, with an agreement expected to be reached for a fee between £45m and £55m in the coming days.
They are also expected to sign a striker this summer, with a second forward possible but dependent on sales amid concerns over financial fair play.
To that end, they are hoping to raise in excess of £100m, with Fred, Anthony Elanga and even Jadon Sancho thought to be up for sale should the right offers come in for them.
Maguire is the main man, however, with the club captain having fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford and only making eight Premier League starts last season. He has been warned by Gareth Southgate that, though he keeps his England spot for now, that cannot continue and with a European Championships taking place in 12 months time, the 30-year-old is keen to move for first-team football.
That could be problematic for several reasons though. He commands a hefty wage, which saw an increase when United qualified for the Champions League last season. On top of that, should any club be able to navigate personal terms with the defender, they will have to deal with United.
They claim that ‘United are not actively looking to sell the former Leicester defender as they would have to recruit an upgrade to replace him’, and as a result will command a massive fee to let him go, something that no club is likely to offer.
Therefore, unless there is a drastic change at Old Trafford in the coming weeks, Maguire could well end up back on the Manchester United bench next season.
