Ryan Mason has admitted that on-loan Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet is ‘they type of player we want’ in the lilywhites dressing room as they weigh up whether to make the deal permanent.

Arriving in north London on a season long loan, the French centre-back has made 24 Premier League appearances in a disappointing campaign for the club, with a place in the Europa Conference League looking likely next season.

And there have been plenty of rumours of making a deal permanent for a fee of around £12m, which would begin Tottenham’s defensive overhaul this summer.

Speaking to the media ahead of their clash with Brentford, Mason revealed that while he is happy to keep Lenglet, it is not something that will be discussed until the end of the season.

“These conversations will happen in the summer. I’d say that Lenglet is the type of player we want. He is professional and he is doing well. We’ll talk to him in the summer”.

Having been linked to the likes of Josko Gvardiol, Alessandro Bastoni and Milan Skriniar just 12 months ago, the deal would be somewhat underwhelming for Spurs fans, with Lenglet having failed to show himself as anything other than solid this season.

It is still unclear just who will be in the Tottenham hot seat this summer despite potential transfer business already going ahead.

Arne Slot, curretly in charge of Feyenoord, is the current favourite to take the job, but he refused to be drawn on the matter in his most recent press conference, pointing to his contract with the Dutch club.

“This morning already we were working on plans for the summer and after the summer. So we just continue like that because I still have a remaining contract – for two years”, he told the media.

Mason, meanwhile, has again suggested he would be happy to take the role permanently.

“I have said I feel ready to help this club and I absolutely do. I remain confident, honestly. Of course it’s club decision, I trust people at the club”.
