The City midfielder has less than 12 months left on his current £150,000-a-week contact.
There has been speculation over Gundogan’s future earlier this year. However, the Bernardo Silva transfer saga appears to have quashed that.
The Portuguese has not started Manchester City’s opening two games of the Premier League campaign, pointing towards an exit being on the horizon.
As a result, Ilkay Gundogan has stepped in to partner Kevin De Bruyne in the centre of Man City’s midfield.
The 31-year-old has excelled in this role and scored for Manchester City vs Bournemouth on Saturday, linking up well with Erling Haaland.
Speaking after Bournemouth, Kevin De Bruyne was also full of praise for Gundogan:
Kevin De Bruyne on Gundogan:
“He’s amazing. I think he understands perfectly the rhythm. I think he’s got that moment where he turns up in the box and it’s very dangerous. He scores a lot and the one-two with Erling [Haaland] started the game off.” [@ManCity]

Will Manchester City sign another midfielder?
But whilst keeping hold of Gundogan seems like a smart move on Man City’s part, they could still probably do with some fresh legs through the door if Bernardo Silva leaves for Barcelona.
However, Manchester City have become fairly smart in their spending, and it is not like them to just go out and snap up a player after little planning.
So, if a deal for Silva does not get done until the end of August, then Manchester City may simply have to survive with one less midfielder until January or maybe next summer.
