Manchester City defender Nathan Ake has signed a new four year deal at the Etihad stadium after a phenomenal season with the club.

The Dutchman quickly became first choice under Pep Guardiola following the departure of Joao Cancelo and subsequent change of system to a back three, with Ake being the only left-footed defender capable of fulfilling the role.

Appearing 41 times in total, he was a crucial cog in the CIty side that lifted a historic treble last achieved in 1999 by cross-city rivals Manchester United, and was considered one of the standout defenders of the season in the Premier League.

Now his performances have been rewarded with a new deal, with the Dutchman having agreed to a further 4 years at the Etihad Stadium.

“I’m so pleased to extend my contract with this great club. It’s been an incredible 3 years and I can’t wait to see what the next 4 years will bring us”, he wrote on social media.

“This is the best club in the world, I have no doubts about that,” he added on Man City’s official website.

“It’s a football club that expects excellence in every area, which makes for the perfect environment to improve. It drives me on and makes me better. I am at the stage of my career where I want to keep developing and I can definitely do that here.

He is likely to face renewed competition for his spot this campaign, with Manchester City keen on signing RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol ahead of September’s deadline, though a deal is not thought to be close at present.
