Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou are set to re-approach London rivals Chelsea for midfielder Conor Gallagher in a bid to bolster their ranks in the final 48 hours of the transfer window, it has been reported.
The Lilywhites have a competent first XI, but any suggestions of squad depth were promptly destroyed by a penalty shoot-out exit against Fulham in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
They are yet to sign anyone since the departure of talisman and all-time top goalscorer Harry Kane, though they are thought to be in talks to sign Brennan Johnson in a deal from Nottingham Forest that could yet reach £50m.
Now, they are looking to west London for further additions and are hoping to take advantage of the arrival of Cole Palmer at Stamford Bridge to try and lure Conor Gallagher away from his boyhood club.
The Englishman, expected to be named in Gareth Southgate’s squad in the coming hours, has started each of the first four games of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign but the arrival of Palmer will put added onus on his place in the side.
The Telegraph claim that, after the Blues spent £400m this summer ‘Tottenham may give Chelsea something to think about should they bid anywhere near £50 million for England international Gallagher.’
Speaking just last night after captaining Chelsea to a 2-1 win over Wimbledon to set up a Carabao Cup third round tie with Brighton, Gallagher didn’t seem to have departure on his mind.
“I’ve been here from when I was seven or eight years old, when the academy started – It’s a dream at the moment, but I don’t want to stop. I want to keep helping the club”, he explained.
Any deal will also likely depend on the future of Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who has drawn interest from Manchester United and Atletico Madrid this summer.
