Arsenal and Manchester United both face all-Premier League ties in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup as Liverpool and Chelsea were handed lower-league opposition in a wide open competition.

Treble winners Manchester City were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the third round stage for the first time in Pep Guardiola’s career as a rotated side fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United at Saint James’ Park.

In a tetchy affair a tap in from Alexander Isak ensured that the home side moved into the next round at the expense of the Cityzens, and blew the competition wide open in the process.

Eddie Howe’s side were rewarded with a tie against Manchester United, who they lost to in the final last season and they will be hoping that they can go one better this season as they continue to battle on four fronts.

That comes as Manchester United booked their place in the fourth round with a convincing 3-0 win over Crystal Palace, courtesy of goals from Casemiro, Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Martial.

They were joined by fellow Premier League sides Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton, who all came through games against Premier League opposition, though with six all-Premier League ties it was inevitable that there would be plenty of casualties in the early stage of the competition.

The pair were rewarded with games against Championship Middlesbrough and Premier League Fulham respectively, with both sides drawn at home.

Also from the lower leagues, League Two Mansfield Town and League One Port Vale advanced to the fourth round with wins over Peterborough United and Sutton United. They will meet each other in the next round, meaning that one of them will be in the quarter final of the competition.

The ties will take place in the week beginning the Week commencing the 30th October.
