Shakhtar CEO explains what Chelsea must do to activate Mykhaylo Mudryk bonus clauses

The Blues broke plenty of records to land the Ukrainian attacker, but what do they need to do to activate the added clauses?

Additional transfer clauses can vary hugely. Last summer, Bayern Munich’s bid for Sadio Mane initially involved add-ons activated only if the Senegalese attacker won the Ballon D’or three times in a row, a feat only ever achieved by Lionel Messi and Michel Platini.

On the flip side, Wolves have already seen their obligation to buy Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid, with the deal hinging on the Brazilian making three appearances for the midlands outfit while on loan.

So, what are Chelsea paying for new star Mykhaylo Mudryk, who has arrived in a deal worth 70m euros up front, and a further 30m euros in bonuses?

According to the Shakhtar Donetsk CEO Sergei Palkin, it was in the bonuses that Chelsea really blew Arsenal out of the water for the Ukrainian star.

“We can talk about bonuses, but these bonuses should be somehow achievable and realistic, let’s say”, he explained. “Therefore, in this case, Chelsea was much more serious and fair in some points”

And he went on to confirm that the bonuses largely related to Chelsea winning the Premier League and Champions League, and that they would be active across the entirity of Mudryk’s eight and a half year contract at Stamford Bridge.

“Chelsea’s offer for Mudryk has no Ballon d’Or clause. It is achievable bonuses that we feel can be reached”, Palkin confirmed.

Meanwhile, he also revealed that talks with Arsenal were already off before Chelsea came to the table, explaining that “when they proposed the final offer of €70million plus €30million (in add-ons), we sat down and started to talk internally about how it will be fulfilled in terms of the payments, the fixed part and the bonus issues. We realised we will not close this deal (with Arsenal).”
