Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has assured his club captain Harry Maguire that he will be handed a chance to prove himself after an impressive World Cup showing for England.
Maguire was the centre of media scrutiny ahead of the tournament for his inclusion in the squad, with Southgate selecting the defender despite him having managed just four Premier League appearances for the Red Devils so far this campaign.
He had been overlooked by Ten Hag, who had instead opted for a defensive partnership of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, but Maguire put in a string of excellent performances for the Three Lions, including a man-of-the-match outing against the USA. Such form has once again opened up the issue of his selection at club level.
And, quizzed on his captain ahead of the resumption of the Premier League, Ten Hag was at pains to reveal that Maguire will be given another chance to prove his value to the new United boss, with the Dutchman admitting that ‘it’s clear’ the defender can play at the highest level.
“Harry Maguire will have his chance. It’s clear he is good enough to play at highest level”, he explained.
“We want Harry to bring same energy as with England on the pitch for Man Utd. If he does that, he will be a great player for us”
Nonetheless, expect Maguire in a Manchester United shirt on your TV screens very soon.
