The Manchester United hierarchy are reportedly split over whether or not Mason Greenwood should be able to return to the club after his charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm were dropped by the police.

“A combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case”, a CPS spokesperson explained.

Though he has had charges dropped, he has not been found innocent (because the case never went to trial) and the social media videos that initially sparked his arrest continue to circulate.

And Manchester United confirmed that they were mulling over a decision regarding whether or not the 22-year-old forward should be allowed to return to play for the Red Devils, where he is under contract until 2025.

“Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped”, an official statement said.

“The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”

“Although a substantial proportion of the workforce would be deeply unhappy if Greenwood played for the club again, others feel a duty of care toward a player who joined at age seven and has not been found guilty of any crime”, they report.

“It is understood that it could go either way regarding the 21-year-old staying at the club”, they add.
