Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk has, on Saturday, provided an insight into his stance on taking on the role of club captain on a permanent basis for the season ahead.

The subject of the captain’s armband has of course proven a major talking point on the red half of Merseyside over the course of the week to date.

This comes after ex-Reds skipper Jordan Henderson’s move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq was at long last made official.

A host of members of Jurgen Klopp’s squad, in turn, have been tipped as potential successors in the media.

The widespread favourite, though, has long been the aforementioned Van Dijk, with the Dutch international having donned the captain’s armband in Liverpool colours on a number of occasions in the past.

It should therefore not come as a major surprise to hear that VVD would relish the opportunity to lead his side’s charge into 2023/24.

And Van Dijk went on to confirm that he would view the responsibility as an ‘honour’.

“The captaincy has not been announced yet so I can’t say much about it,” he began.

“But obviously I’ve captained the side multiple times already over the last couple of years and it’s always a proud moment. We will see what the future brings but it would be a huge honour to captain the side.”
