Nigel James, father of Chelsea star Reece. has seemingly shut down any suggestion that the right back will be leaving his boyhood club anytime soon while appearing on a podcast.

The right-back has long been linked with a move to Real Madrid, with the Spanish giants having reportedly earmarked him as their long term solution on the right side of defence, with Dani Carvajal now nearing the point where his abilities may begin to decline.

However, his father has firmly shut the door on that, claiming that James only wants to stay at Chelsea, the club where he has been since he was six years old.

Better yet, the Champions League winner wants to captain the Blues, something that could be a reality sooner rather than later with the amount of change that is ongoing in west London.

“His ambition is to wear Chelsea armband and captain the side”, Nigel James explained to the Beautiful Game Podcast.

“It broke his heart the season that we’ve had just gone. Losing games… it really hurt him”, he added.

Still just 23-years-old, James has struggled through injury and managed just 16 Premier League appearances last season, while he also missed the World Cup in Qatar.

With just 26 top flight appearances in 2021-22 too, there is hope that the arrival of Malo Gusto from Lyon will help manage his workload, but his availability must improve if he is to be given the captaincy of the club on a permanent basis.
