Manchester United have narrowed down their choice of new defenders to just three options should Harry Maguire depart Old Trafford this summer.

Long considered surplus to requirements at Manchester United, Maguire was stripped of the captaincy over the off-season and has been free to depart for much of the transfer window, but no bids had matched Erik ten Hag’s £50m valuation of the Englishman.

Now, however, they have reached a compromise with West Ham United, and the centre-back is expected to join David Moyes at the London Stadium in a deal worth around £30m.

Personal terms are not expected to be a problem for the two parties, and though Maguire won’t in all likelihood be able to make his debut for his new side on the opening weekend (he would have to be registered by Midday on Friday), he will be in contention for West Ham’s second game of the campaign.

When Maguire does depart, United will look to move quickly to find a replacement. To that end, they have narrowed down their list to three potential options.

Former Barcelona defender Jean-Clair Todibo is thought to be top of that list, with the Red Devils looking to find cover for Raphael Varane in the form of his 23-year-old compatriot.

Finally, Tottenham target Edmond Tapsoba is thought to be on their wishlist, though he will be the most expensive of the trio with the Burkina Faso defender valued at around £50m.

Meanwhile, Ten Hag is keen to add another midfielder to his ranks before the end of the transfer window, with Sofyan Amrabat top of their list to arrive in the coming weeks.
