Manchester United are struggling to offload club captain Harry Maguire this summer due to the fact that they qualified for the Champions League in Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge, it has emerged.
The Red Devils finished an impressive third last season, as well as lifting the Carabao Cup and reaching the final of the FA Cup (which they ultimately lost to Manchester City).
It meant that they qualified for the Champions League once more, after spending a season in the Europa League, and with that came bonuses.
As per the Guardian, ‘in line with the rest of United’s squad Maguire was rewarded with a considerable wage rise’, which has in turn made it very difficult for any interested club to offer him a contract that interests the Englishman.
Magure lost his spot in Ten Hag’s side early on in the season and has struggled since, making just 8 Premier League starts and falling behind Victor Lindelof in the pecking order as well as first choice pair Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.
He was selected for England’s Euro2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia, but was warned by Southgate that he cannot be picked forever without having access to regular first-team football, with EURO2024 just 12 months away.
West Ham United were rumoured to be interested in taking Maguire to the London Stadium, while there is also thought to be interest from around the Premier League but not at the £40m price tag Manchester United have set, especially with Maguire’s hefty personal pay packet.
