Tottenham defender Ben Davies is expected to miss much of the rest of the season after picking up a hamstring injury during Spurs’ 3-3 draw with Southampton, it has been revealed.
The Welshman has been a mainstay of Antonio Conte’s Tottenham defence this season, featuring in 25 of the 28 Premier League games to date, but was forced off ten minutes before half time in their most recent clash with Southampton.
It prompted another change from the Lilywhites, who had already been forced to withdraw Richarlison through injury after just ten minutes, and Football.London report that Davies ‘has been ruled out for between four to six weeks’ as a result of the hamstring issue.
Davies was forced to watch on as his side squandered a 3-1 lead at St Mary’s to drop two points in the race for top 4 football courtesy of an injury-time penalty from James Ward-Prowse.
And in the immediate aftermath, Antonio Conte took aim at the club, players and owners in a astonishing rant which is set to cost him his job according to current reports.
“I think it’s better to go into the problem, we are not a team,” he said. “We are 11 players that go into the pitch. I see selfish players, players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart [into it]. This season compared to last, now we are worse in this aspect. When you are not a team you cannot improve.”
“You risk to disrupt the figure of the manager and to protect the other situation in every moment. Until now I try to hide the situation but now, no, because I repeat I don’t want to see what I have seen today.”
Any new boss, whether it be Ryan Mason in caretaker charge or a new appointment, will have to make do without Ben Davies for the majority of the rest of the season, which may restrict their options should they opt to return to a back 4, with Ryan Sessegnon also sidelined.
