Newcastle United have announced their first major signing of the summer as Sandro Tonali has become AC Milan’s record sale.
The Magpies have been on the hunt for midfield additions since January, with a first season back in the Champions League beckoning for Eddie Howe’s side.
Having seen efforts to lure Mason Mount, Dominik Szoboszlai and others turned down, they have now landed their man in the form of Italian midfield general Sandro Tonali.
Formerly likened to Andrea Pirlo (it’s not just the hair, promise), Tonali had become a key part of the AC Milan side that reached the semi-final of the Champions League, and had previously claimed that he wanted to spend the rest of his career with the Rossoneri.
Now, however, he is a Newcastle player. The Italian has penned a five year contract on Tyneside and has arrived at the club for a fee believed to be in the region of 70m euros (£60m).

It is not quite their record signing, with Alexander Isak’s arrival from Real Sociedad thought to have set Newcastle back £63m, but it remains a major statement of intent from the Magpies and their new ownership.

Meanwhile, Magpies boss Eddie Howe added that “I’m delighted to welcome Sandro to Newcastle United.”He is an exceptional talent and has the mentality, physicality and technical attributes to be a great fit for us.
“At 23, Sandro already has important experience as a key player in one of Europe’s top leagues and in the Champions League, as well as playing for his country.
“But he also has the opportunity and potential to grow and evolve with us, and I’m excited to add him to our squad as we approach the exciting season ahead.”
