Harry Kane’s strike against Italy this evening finally cemented his place in England’s history as the nation’s all-time leading goal scorer.

The striker overtakes Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 England goals and has done so in 29 fewer appearances, with some special strikes along the way.

Here are the five best of his 54 goals for the Three Lions…

Setting the tone (World Cup, 2018)

England looked set for a hugely underwhelming start to their World Cup 2018 campaign in Russia.

The Three Lions were having to settle for just a point until Kane popped up at the back post.

In the 91st minute, the striker managed to divert Harry Maguire’s header into the back of the net to hand the Three Lions the perfect start to their group stage.

Johann Kane (Friendly, 2016)

Kane produced this extraordinary goal as England fought back from 2-0 down in Berlin to win 3-2.

His beautiful Cruyff turn allowed him to beat three German defenders, he then fired a well-struck shot across goal and past Manuel Neuer.

Jamie Vardy and then an Eric Dier header in the 91st minute saw England produce a famous win over their long-time rivals, something that they replicated five years later…

Back on track (Euro2020, 2021)

Harry Kane had a tricky start to Euro 2020 as he failed to score in the group stage and subsequently, he found himself coming under plenty of pressure from England fans and the media.

However, in the Round of 16, he netted a massive goal to help the Three Lions see off Germany.

Raheem Sterling had already put England 1-0 up before Kane doubled their lead, booking their place in the quarter-finals in the process in a tournament which Southgate’s side lost in the final on penalties.

Taking aim from range (Euro 2020 qualifiers, 2021)

Kane left former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny with no chance as he hit a long-range, dipping shot past him. Picking the ball up 30 yards from goal with the score at 0-0, England’s captain took a quick glance up before taking aim and burying the ball in the corner.

Poland ended up securing a point from the match as Sebastian Szymański equalised in stoppage-time, but Kane’s goal still dominated the aftermath.

Downing the Danes (Euro2020, 2021)

Harry Kane stepped up to secure England’s place in their first major final since 1966, but it wasn’t done the easy way.

The striker saw his original spot kick saved before he followed in to beat Kasper Schmeichel and thump England into the lead.

His goal sent the nation into a frenzy as Gareth Southgate’s team saw off Denmark in extra-time after falling behind in the first half, heading through to face Italy at Wembley.
