Manchester United kicked off the clash 14 points off top spot but with two games in hand on league leaders, Arsenal.
As for Liverpool, following Tottenham and Newcastle losses on Saturday, the Reds could have moved up to 4th if they win both of their games in hand on Spurs, one of which was Sunday’s tie with United.
And when all was said and done on Merseyside, Liverpool won in style.
Liverpool started the better of the two sides with Manchester United slow on the ball. However, the Reds did not really test the home side in the opening 15 minutes.
And any chances Liverpool did create were largely cut out by Lisandro Martinez, who had a very impressive first 25 minutes.
Manchester United grew into the match as the first half wore on, with the home crowd growing frustrated. Casemiro scored in the 41st minute but he was offside.
Jurgen Klopp’s side then scored a second goal just moments into the second half after some poor defending from Weghorst, Casemiro, Varane and Luke Shaw led to Darwin Nunez heading in a Harvey Elliott cross.
The home side then killed the game off inside the opening 50 minutes. Cody Gakpo started a counterattack before working his way into the box and slotting home a pass from Salah after being left unmarked.
Manchester United were then countered for a second time 65 minutes in, with Mo Salah the man to finish it off this time around. Nunez added a 5th 10 minutes later to rub salt in the wounds before Salah made it 6-0 with seven minutes to play.
Roberto Firmino, who is set to leave Liverpool this summer, came off the bench to make it 7-0 after 89 minutes.

Match reaction
It’s been a very fast game where little has actually happened.

The United players feel drained. Don’t blame them!
They’ve been involved in a lot of matches off late.
However, we got this! Let’s go REDS!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Antony is such a frustrating player #MUFC

That sort of goal is Gakpo’s bread and butter. Attack the left space. Curled finish into the far corner.
1-0

Terrible time to concede just before half-time.
Fred didn’t do enough there filling in at RB and Varane over committed.
We have it all to do yet again in what has been an even game thus far. #MUFC #LIVMUN
