Premier League clubs are reportedly set to vote against Wolves’ proposal to scrap the use of the video assistant referee in top-flight games.
Wolves formally submitted a resolution to the Premier League in May, triggering a vote on retaining the use of VAR between Premier League clubs.
The implementation of VAR continues to be a source of controvery, with the Midlands club in particular on the wrong end of some contentious calls last season.
But multiple sources including the BBC suggest it is unlikely they will get the 14 votes needed to pass the change through.
It is reported that Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham are among clubs who want to keep VAR but are demanding improvements to be made.
A source from another Premier League club said VAR “isn’t working” and there “clearly are issues” with the way the system is being used.
What changes to VAR are coming?
While Wolves are set to fail in their efforts, one significant change is set to be introduced from next season after a succesful trial period by FIFA.
The use of in-game VAR announcements are set to be passed through in the hope of giving supporters more transparency over decisions made.
Though match referee will only be confirming decisions already made by VAR, the Premier League see it as a step forward.
Semi-automated offsides will not be introduced until after the 2024-25 season has started but the Premier League is confident of it arriving by Autumn.
