Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo has praised his side’s mentality after they came back to beat Poland 2-1 in their opening game of Euro 2024.

Ronald Koeman’s side found themselves 1-0 down after 16 minutes as Adam Buska headed home in the absence of talisman Robert Lewandowski.

But the Dutch rallied and dominated the ball, eventually finding an equaliser through Gakpo, whose deflected strike found its way past Wojciech Szczesny.

The Liverpool man had the chance to double his tally in the match but sent a Nathan Ake cross over from close range.

But as he did against Argentina in the World Cup two years ago, Wout Weghorst popped up with a late goal, scoring from close range.

It was a huge win for the Netherlands, who will compete alongside France and Austria in Group D.

Dropped points may have put their place in the top-two in jeopardy, but Gakpo always knew one of his team-mates could create something special.

Speaking after the match, the Player of the Match said: “It was a tough match, against a tough opponent.

“Obviously, they scored first, so it was a little bit more difficult. But we created a lot of good opportunities, good chances.

“We have to be more clinical. But overall, I think we performed really well.

“We are a team that never gives up, and we have good substitutes.

“We changed the whole front line and they came in and performed very well. So yes, that’s a strength as well.

“My family was here, in the stadium, so that was great.

“As for the scenes at the end, I cannot describe it.

“It’s an amazing feeling. I’m very happy that we took all three points.”
