Ryan Porteous’ European Championships might be over after the Scotland defender was handed a two-match ban by UEFA after his red card in Friday’s defeat against Germany.
The 25-year-old Watford defender was sent-off after a VAR review of his challenge on Ilkay Gundogan, which allowed Kai Havertz to put Germany 3-0 up from the penalty spot shortly before half-time at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
Germany went on to win 5-1 to leave Scotland rooted to the bottom of Group A and facing a battle to qualify for the Round of 16, which would require them to finish in the top-two or as one of four best third-placed finishers.
Porteous faced a one-match ban for his dismissal but on Monday afternoon the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body decided to extend the ban to two games due to it being ‘serious rough play.’
Scotland take on Switzerland, who defeated Hungary 3-1 on Saturday, in Cologne on Wednesday (8pm BST) before finishing their group campaign against Hungary in Stuttgart on June 23.
manager Steve Clarke told a media conference that his red card would be a learning opportunity for the former Hibernian man.
“He hasn’t been sent off for a couple of years, Ryan,” Clarke said. “He’s been great for us since I gave him his chance in Ukraine.
“He was trying to stop a clear goalscoring opportunity. He definitely went in too hard and we’re all pleased that Gundogan has no lasting damage.
“It is something Ryan will learn, but it was an honest challenge to try to get the ball. I wouldn’t be too hard on him.”
