Hungary striker Barnabas Varga suffered a fractured cheekbone but is “not in any danger” following a sickening collision during their 1-0 win over Scotland last night.
Varga was hurt in the 68th-minute of the game in Stuttgart after challenging for a ball with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
Lengthy on-field treatment, which included medical staff screening Varga from view by holding up sheets around him, led to concerns for the Ferencvaros man.
The 29-year-old was taken to hospital where his condition was described as stable.
A statement from the Hungarian Football Federation read: “Several bones in Barnabas Varga’s face were broken during the collision during the match, and he also suffered a concussion.
“The Ferencvaros striker is most likely to undergo surgery. He will spend the night in the hospital in Stuttgart. The whole team is rooting for him.”
Hungary coach Marco Rossi added: “I don’t know what happened.
“All I could see was that he collided with the goalkeeper or another opponent. It was a confusing situation and that’s why the VAR checked for a penalty. But what the players have told me was that Barni wasn’t conscious and they were very worried about his condition.
“Everyone was worried because the doctors arrived a bit late. I don’t think they realised it was a dangerous situation. But Barni is not in any danger now.
“He fractured here [pointing at his cheekbone] and is going to have an operation in the next few hours. But he is healthy. The most important thing is he’s healthy.
“Of course, and for sure if we go through the competition he will not be any more a part of the team.”
Hungary are in with a chance of finishing as one of the four-best third-place finishers after beating Scotland courtesy of Kevin Csoboth’s strike in the 10th minute of injury time.
