Memphis Depay says there has been friction in the Netherlands camp following their underwhelming group-stage performances at Euro 2024 but insists the players are now “looking forward”.

The Dutch finished third in Group D after one win in three games – and that required a late goal from Wout Weghorst to see off Poland. A goalless draw with France and a 3-2 defeat to Austria followed which meant they only advanced as one of the four best third-placed finishers.

Depay revealed there had been plenty of internal discussions regarding their form.

“The tournament is only starting now,” said Depay, who is a free agent after leaving Atletico Madrid.

“We must ensure that we learn from our mistakes. We had discussions and criticised each other and it is normal that there is friction if the results do not go as you want them to go. It’s logical that there will be irritations.

“But that’s behind us now. There’s a good spirit among the group and we are looking forward.”

Ronald Koeman’s side face Romania in the last 16 on Tuesday with the Netherlands boss having backed Depay to come good after criticism of his performances in Germany.

Depay added: “I feel the coach’s confidence and I would like to repay him. It is of course important that you have support from the man who selects the line-up.”
