FIFA says it is happy to discuss the football calendar with the leagues threatening legal action over the increasinly congested schedule.
The European Leagues, which represents 39 leagues in 33 countries, and global players’ union Fifpro announced the action over what they describe as Fifa’s “abuse of dominance” in the game.
In May, the World Leagues Association — which represents 46 leagues, including the Premier League — announced it might pursue legal action if FIFA proceeds with its plans to host a 32-team Club World Cup at the end of next season.
There is growing pressure over toll the increased schedule is having on players, with the new-look FIFA Club World Cup set to increase workload even more.
Global football’s governing body says they are happy to discuss the matter and reiterated its focus on doing “what is best for the game around the world”.
A FIFA spokesperson said: “Fifa has reiterated an invitation to meet and discuss the calendar with World Leagues Association and Fifpro, having received no response to a letter on 10 May 2024.
“FIFA believes there is a more productive way forward for football than the threat of legal action and the offer to engage in dialogue remains on the table.
“FIFA serves and balances the overall interests of world football, including the protection of players, and always strives to do what is best for the game around the world.”
