Netherlands striker Wout Weghorst has joined Ajax from Burnley for an undisclosed fee.

The 32-year-old has agreed a two-year deal with the Amsterdam giants, ending a stint at Turf Moor which began with his move from Wolfsburg in January 2022.

After failing to fire the Clarets to Premier League survival he has gone on loan at Besiktas, Manchester United and Hoffenheim in recent seasons.

Weghorst came through the ranks at Emmen before moving to Heracles and AZ before moving to Germany to join Wolfsburg in 2018.

He made his debut for Netherlands that same year and has gone on to represent his nation 39 times, including at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and Euro 2024.

The forward came off the bench in Burnley’s opening two Championship match of the season but was left out of Saturday’s defeat at Sunderland.

He only made 22 appearances for the Clarets in total, making 31 for Man United, and scoring twice in 2022/23 and adding nine goals in 19 games for Besiktas earlier that same season.

He netted seven in 28 Bundesliga games for Hoffenheim last season.

Ajax Technical director Alex Kroes told the club website: “Wout stands for an absolute top sports experience, and we find that extremely important at Ajax.

“He is a prolific striker who constantly makes things difficult for every opponent. There are many matches coming up in the next few months, so we are happy that Wout is joining us.”
