Spain struggled to find the net in a bore 0-0 draw with Serbia to kickstart their Nations League campaign on Thursday.
La Roja won the tournament last summer, beating Croatia on penalties.
They also went on to win Euro 2024 this year, but their reign as European champions did not get off to the start they were looking for.
Serbia stood firm in Belgrade, with much action in their goalmouth but crucially no breaches.
Ayoze Perez had a great chance in the first half, leading an effort on target and forcing a good save from Predrag Rajkovic.
Luka Jovic had the chance to equalise at the other end, but missed the target from close range, while Velijko Birmancevic forced a good save from David Raya.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with youngster Lamine Yamal getting himself into a few good positions but unable to make the net bulge.
Ultimately it was a well-earned point for Serbia, and a disappointing night for Luis de la Fuente’s men.
They now sit third in League A Group 4 after Denmark beat Switzerland on the same night.
But Spain will have the chance to redeem themselves when they face the Swiss themselves on Sunday.
