David Moyes says Erik ten Hag is doing a “brilliant job” at Manchester United as club executives gather in London this afternoon to discuss the Dutchman’s future.

Ten Hag is in his third season at Old Trafford but there have been few signs of improvement on the pitch with United 14th in the Premier League and without a win in five games in all competitions.

Minority owner Jim Ratcliffe and the rest of the club’s football department – including CEO Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth – are due to discuss Ten Hag today at a pre-arranged gathering and Moyes, who succeeded Alex Ferguson in 2013 but lasted just nine uninspiring months, believes he should be given more time.

The Scotsman told BBC Sport: “I think he’s doing a brilliant job. I think he’s shown brilliant resilience in the situation that he’s in and I think he should be credited for how well he’s conducted himself.

“As far as I know, I don’t see him ducking any questions or any media interviews that you people [the media] put forward to him.

“I think you have to give him great credit for that but it’s a job that is going to attract immense pressure, people talking, so I have to say that I think he’s doing a brilliant job.”

Ten Hag remains defiant

Speaking after Sunday’s drab 0-0 draw at Aston Villa, Ten Hag remained confident he retained the backing of the club’s owners.

He said: “We always speak. Every week we speak.

“So we are all on board, together, on one page. We know where we are working to.

“It’s a long-term project and we have to keep on improving the process.”

Tuchel and Southgate tipped to succeed Ten Hag

It was widely reported Ratcliffe spoke to former Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel over the summer and he remains the favourite to take over at Old Trafford should Ten Hag depart.

Gareth Southgate, who led England to the Euro 2024 final in July, is another expected to be under consideration.

United return to action on October 19 when they host Brentford.
