The Football Association have charged Tottenham following allegations of homophobic chanting by fans during their 3-0 victory over Manchester United earlier in the season.
The incidents reportedly took place in the 49th and 79th minutes of the Premier League match at Old Trafford on September 29.
Subjects of the chants included Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount.
In response to the charge, Tottenham issued a strong statement saying: “This is simply unacceptable, hugely offensive and no way to show support for the team.
“The club will be working closely with the police and stewards to identify anyone instigating or joining in with the chanting – we shall take the strongest possible action in accordance with our sanctions and banning policy.”
The FA has charged Spurs with two violations of Rule E21, which addresses crowd behavior, specifically in relation to fan conduct at matches.
According to an FA statement, Tottenham “failed to ensure” that supporters acted in an orderly manner and refrained from using language or behaving in an “improper, offensive, abusive, indecent or insulting way with either an express or implied reference to sexual orientation.”
Tottenham has until next Wednesday to formally respond to the FA regarding the charge.
