Erik ten Hag is set to miss out on the Roma job with the club reportedly closing in on Vincenzo Montella.

Ten Hag was a reported target for Giallorossi owners, the Friedkin Group, along with the likes of Max Allegri, Roberto Mancini, Graham Potter and Edin Terzic following the weekend sacking of Ivan Juric.

But Roma have, according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, made Montella their preferred candidate and are now attempting to negotiate a deal that will see him leave his current role as Turkey national team boss.

Gazzetta claim there is a €1million clause in Montella’s contract that Roma are willing to pay to bring the former Roma striker back to the Stadio Olimpico.

Montella remains a Roma hero

Montella spent nine seasons with Roma, scoring 101 goals, in a glittering playing career that also saw him capped 20 times by Italy.

Having ended his playing career, he then became Roma’s Under-15 coach but was swiftly promoted to interim boss of the first team in February 2011 following the resignation of Claudio Ranieri.

He oversaw 13 games, winning seven, before making way for Luis Enrique at the end of that season.

He is thought to be eager to return to the club and optimistic a deal can be done prior to Turkey’s Nations League game with Wales on Saturday.

Ten Hag had reservations

Ten Hag is in the Netherlands after being sacked by Manchester United a fortnight ago.

Gazzetta report Ten Hag would have given consideration to the Roma job but had concerns over the owners’ willingness to sack coaches. Juric lasted just 12 games after succeeding Daniele De Rossi in September.
