Frank Lampard has been confirmed as the manager of Championship side Coventry.

The former Chelsea and England midfielder has signed a two-and-a-half year deal to succeed Mark Robins at the Sky Blues.

Lampard takes over with the West Midlands side 17th in the Championship table, only two points off the drop zone.

Coventry sacked long-serving boss Robins earlier this month after seven years at the helm as they begin a new era under the former Chelsea, Everton and Derby manager.

Chairman Doug King said: “I am delighted that Frank Lampard has agreed to join our club as head coach. Frank cut his teeth in the Championship and knows what is needed in this League to be successful.

“His experiences thereafter at Chelsea and Everton will ensure he brings to our talented squad clear understanding of exactly what is needed to succeed at the very top level that we as a club are striving to reach.”

Lampard’s first match in charge will be against Cardiff City at home on Saturday.

The Coventry job will be Lampard’s fifth in management and first in the Championship since Derby, where he began his managerial career.

He took the Rams to the Championship play-off final before landing a return to manage Chelsea, who he spent 13 years with as a player.

The 46-year-old guided the Blues into the Champions League in his first campaign in 2019-20 before he was sacked the following January.

After a year out of work, Lampard returned to the Premier League with struggling Everton, who he guided to safety in 2021-22, only to then once again be sacked the following January with the club deep in relegation trouble.

Lampard’s last role was another spell as Chelsea boss, replacing Graham Potter as interim from April 2023 until the end of the season.
