Manuel Neuer was sent off for the first time in his storied career to reduce Bayern Munich to 10 players after 17 minutes of their DFB Cup tie against Bayer Leverkusen.

Germany legend Neuer was dismissed after racing out of his box and bringing down Jeremie Frimpong in the round of 16 at the Allianz Arena.

Neuer was seen apologising to manager Vincent Kompany and forward Leroy Sane, who made way for replacement goalkeeper Daniel Peretz.

Neuer sent off

A booking against Augsburg in January was Neuer’s only booking last season and the most recent of his 23 cautions since his senior club debut for Schalke in 2006.

The Bayern captain was making his 19th appearance of 2024/25, having helped his side move four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.

The 38-year-old was in goal for Bayern’s 4-0 thrashings of SSV Ulm and Mainz in their first two games in the DFB Cup.

Bayern vs Leverkusen

Bayern had started brightly in the absence of Harry Kane through a hamstring injury, going close when Florian Wirtz fired wide.

Sane was shorn from a frontline also featuring Kingsley Coman, Jamal Musiala and Michael Olise, and Neuer’s departure did not seem to unduly trouble Kompany’s side.

Konrad Laimer broke clear and sent a shot against the side netting shortly before Peretz saved a strike from Frimpong with a foot.

Visiting goalkeeper Matej Kovar kept out Leon Goretzka’s header and Peretz repelled an attempt from Wirtz as the sides reached the interval level.

Who is Daniel Peretz?

Israel goalkeeper Peretz joined Bayern from Maccabi Tel Aviv for a reported fee of more than £4.1 million in August 2023.

Now 24, he made his Bayern debut against Preußen Munster in the DFB Cup in September 2023, with his solitary Bundesliga appearance so far coming against Wolfsburg in May.

Peretz enjoyed one of the finest performances of his career on November 14, helping Israel draw 0-0 away to France in the Nations League.
