Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has openly criticised the club’s management for insufficient investment following their 4-3 defeat to Chelsea.

The loss marked another setback in a challenging spell for Spurs under Ange Postecoglou, who have managed only one victory in their last seven matches across all competitions.

Romero, speaking to Telemundo Deportes after the match, expressed his concerns about the club falling behind their Premier League rivals due to a lack of financial commitment.

The Argentina international suggested that other top clubs continually invest to remain competitive.

He said: “Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results.

“Those are the things to imitate. “You have to realise that something is going wrong, hopefully, they [the board] realise it.

“The last few years, it’s always the same – first the players, then the coaching staff changes, and it’s always the same people responsible.

“Hopefully they realise who the true responsible ones are and we move forward because it’s a beautiful club that, with the structure it has, could easily be competing for the title every year.”

The Australian manager is the fifth coach Romero has worked under since joining Spurs in 2021, including interim appointments.

Sunday’s defeat to their London rivals left Spurs languishing in the bottom half of the league table, sitting 11th after 15 games.

The team’s current struggles have intensified scrutiny on the club’s leadership – which we have broken down in a separate piece –  with Romero pointing fingers at the board rather than head coach Ange Postecoglou.

Romero’s remarks came during a live interview with Spanish broadcaster Telemundo Deportes, where he was questioned about Tottenham’s squad depth.
