Kylian Mbappe could miss the Intercontinental Cup final due to the thigh injury he sustained in Real Madrid’s win at Atalanta on Tuesday.

The France striker opened the scoring in Bergamo with a wonderful finish but was then forced off 10 minutes before half-time.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti indicated after the game that Mbappe’s withdrawal was merely a precautionary move.

He said: “It doesn’t look serious. He has an overload, a little discomfort.

“We will have to see in the next few days. It doesn’t seem serious, but he had to stop, because he couldn’t sprint and it was bothering him a little bit. So we preferred to change him.”

Further tests in the Spanish capital have revealed an injury that local daily AS claims will take 10 days to heal.

A club statement read: “Following tests carried out on Kylian Mbappé today by the Real Madrid medical department, the player has been diagnosed with a thigh injury in his left leg. His progress will be monitored.”

That 10-day timeframe will mean Mbappe misses this weekend’s game against Rayo Vallecano and is a major doubt for the Intercontinental Cup final against either Mexican side Pachuca or Egypt’s Al Ahly on December 18.

It is another setback for Mbappe, who has struggled for form and fitness after joining Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain over the summer.
