Real Madrid recovered from being without Kylian Mbappe through injury and falling two goals behind to draw 3-3 at Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, missing the chance to go top of LaLiga.

Mbappe suffered a hamstring injury during Madrid’s 3-2 win at Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday, and the reigning Spanish champions made a dreadful start in the striker’s absence as Unai Lopez opened the scoring for the hosts after four minutes and Abdul Mumin doubled their advantage with a header nine minutes before the break.

After conceding twice from headers, Madrid produced the goal of the half when Federico Valverde struck from 25 yards five minutes before half-time.

Jude Bellingham then powerfully glanced in Rodrygo’s cross with seconds of regular time remaining to level the scores at the break and net in a sixth consecutive game.

Madrid must have felt their comeback had been completed when Rodrygo fired in 11 minutes after the break, only for Florian Lejeune’s long-range effort to take a deflection off team-mate Isi Palazon and deceive visiting goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois seven minutes later.

The Champions League holders are a point behind Barcelona with 17 games played for both of the top two. Atletico Madrid, who are a point behind their city rivals in third, play their game in hand at home to 15th-placed Getafe on Sunday (1pm GMT).

Mallorca fell behind to Donny van de Beek’s seventh-minute goal at home to ninth-placed Girona, but Cyle Larin’s double lifted them to fifth with a 2-1 win despite Vedat Muriqi’s 32nd-minute dismissal between their goals.

Sevilla won 1-0 at home to Celta Vigo to move above their opponents in midtable, and Osasuna rose to seventh with a 0-0 draw at third-bottom Espanyol.

Bundesliga results: Bayern lose at Mainz

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich suffered their first league loss under Vincent Kompany with a 2-1 defeat at Mainz, who rose to sixth with their latest home win following victories over Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim at the Mewa Arena.

South Korea forward Lee Jae-sung struck in the 41st and 60th minutes, although Leroy Sane replied three minutes from time for Bayern, whose injury absentees include Bundesliga top scorer and England captain Harry Kane.

Second-placed Bayer Leverkusen closed the gap at the top to four points by winning 2-0 at Augsburg through goals from Martin Terrier and  Florian Wirtz, although Eintracht Frankfurt will move a point above Xabi Alonso’s side if they win at Leipzig on Sunday (6.30pm GMT).

Elsewhere, Borussia Monchengladbach went 10th with a 4-1 home win over second-bottom Holstein Kiel, while Werder Bremen are seventh after a 2-0 victory at fourth-bottom St Pauli.

Union Berlin remain 12th after equalising in a 1-1 draw at home to bottom side Bochum, who had Koji Miyoshi dismissed in the 13th minute with the score goalless.

Ligue 1 results: Marseille draw boosts PSG

Paris Saint-Germain are four points clear of Marseille and Monaco with a game in hand at the top of Ligue 1 after both of their nearest rivals dropped points.

Quentin Merlin slotted second-placed OM ahead in the 17th minute at home to fourth-placed Lille, but Bafode Diakite headed the visitors level in the 87th minute before a fiery end to the match including a 94th-minute red card for Marseille’s Pol Lirola.

Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi and Lille counterpart Bruno Genesio were both unhappy with referee Willy Delajod, who was escorted from the pitch at full time.

Monaco drew 0-0 at 10th-placed Reims, while Auxerre rose to eighth by equalising twice in a 2-2 draw at home to Lens, who moved sixth. PSG host fifth-placed Lyon on Sunday (7.45pm).

Serie A results: Juventus scrape draw against Venezia

Sixth-placed Juventus were surprisingly held at home by bottom side Venezia, drawing a fourth consecutive league game as both teams scored twice.

After Federico Gatti’s 19th-minute opener for Juve, Mikael Ellertsson headed the visitors level 16 minutes into the second half.

Another header – this time from Jay Idzes – gave Venezia the lead in the 83rd minute, leaving Juventus requiring Dusan Vlahovic’s 95th-minute penalty to secure a point they will be far from satisfied with.

There are no such troubles for Atalanta, who remain top of the table after Nicolo Zaniolo scored the only goal of their game at Cagliari to give his side a 10th consecutive league win and leave The Islanders three points above the relegation zone in 15th.

Second-placed Napoli are two points behind Atalanta, winning 3-1 at ninth-placed Udinese.

Florian Thauvin gave the hosts the lead in the 22nd minute, only for goals by Romelu Lukaku and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, either side of Lautaro Giannetti’s own-goal, to give Antonio Conte’s team their first win in three games in all competitions.
