The Champions League football trophy

The Champions League is Europe’s biggest club cup competition featuring the best teams from the best leagues on the continent. The likes of fifteen-time European champions Real Madrid, seven-time winners AC Milan, and six-time winners Liverpool and Bayern Munich are all looking to add to their tallies this season.

As Things Stand

Liverpool is at the top of the 36-team Champions League table, with six wins from six games so far and two more to go. Arne Slot’s Liverpool side has so far defeated the likes of AC Milan, Bologna, RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, Real Madrid, and Girona. The Reds must still host LOSC Lille at Anfield and travel to Eindhoven to face PSV.

Current Champions Real Madrid are sitting in 20th position in the new-look Champions League table, just five positions away from being eliminated from the competition altogether! Madrid has struggled this year, only winning three of the six games they’ve played in the UCL this season and losing the other three.

Madrid must finish in the top 24 in order to secure a playoff spot or the top eight to qualify for the round of 16 automatically. Real Madrid is currently 4 points away from 8th in the league, so it is not impossible for them to still automatically qualify. However, they need a flawless finish to the league phase. Ancelotti will look to avoid a playoff spot, as that means an extra two games added to Madrid’s hectic schedule. These two games will be played on the 11th, 12th,  18th, and 19th February 2025.

Another big name that is looking more likely to miss out on a knockout spot or even a playoff spot is French Champions PSG. The Parisians are currently occupying 25th place in the League. However, They are only one point behind Dinamo Zagreb, who must face Arsenal next. While PSG also faces a tough test against Man City.
