Borussia Dortmund have reportedly held talks with Ralf Rangnick over their vacant manager’s post following Nuri Sahin’s sacking.
The former Manchester United interim boss, who is currently in charge of the Austria national team, has emerged as a leading contender after holding “secret talks” with the out-of-sorts Bundesliga giants, according to Sky Germany.
It is indicated that Dortmund are keen for the 66-year-old to take charge until the end of the season.
Rangnick is under contract with Austria until the end of the current year and is said to be wary of taking up another interim role in club football, especially given Dortmund’s current situation.
Dortmund are on the hunt for a new manager, with the club currently 10th in the Bundesliga, 20 points off leaders Bayern Munich, while they are also facing an uphill battle to qualify automatically for the Champions League last 16 after last week’s 2-1 collapse at Bologna.
Rangnick took up a similar role with United during the 2021-22 season after taking over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but it ended in disaster, with the Red Devils finishing sixth with what was, at the time, their worst ever points total.
In addition to Sky’s report, The Athletic’s German football correspondent Seb Stafford-Bloor says Rangnick is unlikely to take over Dortmund as interim.
The Black and Yellow have also reportedly in talks with fellow former United boss Erik ten Hag, who has been out of work since his Old Trafford dismissal in November.
But, according to Sky’s report, the Dutch boss does not want to take over mid-season.
Former Bayern boss Niko Kovac also remains a candidate but reportedly prefers a six-month deal with an option for 1-2 additional years.
