Match preview for Liverpool v Newcastle

It has been 70 years since Newcastle won a major domestic trophy. Is this the weekend that wait comes to a end?

Since winning the FA Cup in 1955 the Magpies have lost two finals and two more League Cup finals – including in 2023 when Manchester United lifted the trophy.

It is champions elect Liverpool who stand in their way this time – they may have been knocked out of the Champions League by PSG but Arne Slot’s side are 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League going into the weekend and have won this trophy on a record 10 occasions.

Will Arne Slot emulate Jurgen Klopp’s win of last season?

Team news for Liverpool v Newcastle

Liverpool suffered a blow this week with the news that Trent Alexander-Arnold is set for a spell out with an ankle injury.

Liverpool do not have a recognised right-back for the Wembley final because Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez are still recovering from injuries so Jarell Quansah is likely to fill in.

Newcastle have Anthony Gordon suspended while Lewis Hall and Sven Botman remain out injured. Both managers must decide which goalkeeper to put in.
