Match preview

Will Grimsby Town’s remarkable FA Cup adventure continue?

The Mariners have reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 1939, dumping out Plymouth, Cambridge United, Burton, Luton and then Southampton to get here.

Thus, they’re the first club ever in the 152 year history of this competition to beat five teams from high divisions in the competition proper.

Grimsby are also the first fourth-tier team to get this far since 1990, and no side from the fourth division or below has ever made it to the semi-finals.

Paul Hurst’s outfit were playing non-league football less than 12 months ago, so have certainly come along way.

Brighton & Hove Albion meanwhile are also an excellent story in their own right.

This propelled Roberto De Zerbi’s team up to seventh, dreaming of brining European football to Sussex for the first time ever.

In this competition, Brighton have already eliminated Middlesbrough, Liverpool and then Stoke to get this far.

Only twice before have Albion gone further in the FA Cup, beaten by Manchester City in the 2019 semis and Manchester United in a final replay 40 years ago.

Given the impressive season Brighton are having, a comfortable home win is likely at the Amex.

Brighton & Hove Albion team news

After another impressive performance in mid-week, there’s little reason for Roberto De Zerbi to change much.

In goal, Jason Steele has started the last four matches, with Robert Sánchez having been dropped, following the defeat to Fulham.

So, it’ll be interested to see if Steele keeps his place here, or if the Spaniard is now the nominal ‘cup keeper’ and is rotated in.

At centre-back, Levi Colwill came in for the injured Adam Webster in mid-week, but Jan Paul van Hecke will be hoping for a start here.

In attack, teenager Evan Feguson is likely to return in place of Danny Welbeck.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Steele; Veltman, Dunk, van Hecke, Estupiñán; Caicedo, Groß, Mac Allister, March, Mitoma; Ferguson.

Grimsby Town team news

Paul Hurst’s team beat Sutton United on Tuesday and, despite traveling to Mansfield on Wednesday, will put out their best team for this huge game.

Striker John McAtee is a doubt, having hobbled off against Rochdale last weekend, before being an unused substitute in mid-week.

Gavan Holohan scored a pair of penalties at St Mary’s in round five, so can he get on the scoresheet across the South Coast in round six?

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Crocombe; Smith, Waterfall, Maher; Efete, Morris, Green, Amos, Clifton; Taylor, Lloyd.
