Matchday 31 of the Bundesliga kicks off on Friday night when struggling Wolfsburg host a slipping Mainz 05 outfit that has impressed at many stages of the 2021-22 Bundesliga season. The weekend features a cadre of key clashes, including RB Leipzig hosting high-flying Union Berlin, Freiburg welcoming Gladbach to the Black Forest as they look to push for an unthinkable fourth-place finish, and relegation-threatened Hertha Berlin coming to grips with Stuttgart in the German capital. But the weekend, and possibly the season, will potentially be defined Saturday evening when Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund lock horns in Der Klassiker at the Allianz Arena. Should Bayern win, the Bavarian giants will lift their tenth consecutive Bundesliga title, so it is up to Dortmund to come out on top in this champion six-pointer. VfL Wolfsburg (13th) vs 1.FSV Mainz 05 (9th)
It has been a season to forget for Wolfsburg in 2021-22 but the perennial European challengers have a chance at climbing up the Bundesliga table in the final weeks of the season, and a three-point haul against Mainz would go a long way to making that happen. Mainz has struggled mightily away from home this term but that means little given the form of Die Wölfe all term, and both clubs come into Friday night’s clash missing a key center-back a piece with both Maxence Lacroix and Jeremiah St. Juste absent for both parties. Mainz is the slight favorite on paper, but this could end as a draw given the fact that Die Nullfünfer has the second-worst away record in the Bundesliga.
RB Leipzig (3rd) vs Union Berlin (6th)

Union Berlin continues to perform above expectations since their promotion to the Bundesliga back in 2019-20 and have improved year on year under Urs Fischer to the point where they now have another chance at guaranteed European football as they sit sixth but will come up against a vaunted RB Leipzig outfit which has bounced back under Domenico Tedesco. Die Eisernen have beaten Die Roten Bullen in two of their last three clashes in the league, but Leipzig have won five on the spin against Berlin in Saxony, and their recent results (top of the form table) put them as probably favorites here despite Union currently sitting on a three-match winning run, but only just.
SC Freiburg (5th) vs Borussia Mönchengladbach (11th)
The dream of European nights persists on the edge of the Black Forest as Freiburg have climbed to fifth in the Bundesliga table under adored manager Christian Streich and take a two-match winning run into their clash with a Gladbach outfit that was brought back down to earth last weekend at home against Köln in a 3-1 loss. Breisgau-Brasilianer annihilated Gladbach in the reverse fixture back in December to the tune of a 6-0 drubbing and have earned at least a point against Die Fohlen in three of their last four meetings. This could be a close-run affair, however, with Gladbach posting recent away wins and having generally been performing better of late, so a draw is not out of the question, but Freiburg could sneak it.
Eintracht Frankfurt (10th) vs TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (8th)
Frankfurt host Hoffenheim in the financial capital of Germany as both sides come into the meeting well off the boil in recent weeks as neither side of secured a three-point haul in any of their last four clashes across Bundesliga play, while Die Kraichgauer are looking set to miss out on Europe next season after hitting a wall after they were on pace for a top 6-7 finish. Die Adler has owned the recent meetings between the pair to the tune of five wins in their last six clashes, but Frankfurt has been incredibly poor at home all season long, and this is where Hoffenheim’s stronger attacking qualities could make the difference in what could be a big three points away from home for the Sinsheim-based outfit.
Greuther Fürth (18th) vs Bayer Leverkusen (4th)
1.FC Köln (7th) vs Arminia Bielefeld (17th)
Köln comes into a home clash against relegation-threatened Bielefeld along the Rhine looking clear favorites in a fixture that could keep them in the hunt for a return to Europe for the first time since the 2017-18 season as Die Geißböcke manager Steffen Baumgart has kept his side in the thick of the fight in the top-seven. Morale will be bolstered by Köln dominating their last six meetings, but the reverse fixture earlier in the season saw Die Arminen earn a 1-1 draw on their home patch. Anthony Modeste may have something to say on the matter this weekend, however, with Bielefeld losing five of their last six and looking likely to be unable the drop. Köln for a hard-fought win seems fair on balance.
Bayern Munich (1st) vs Borussia Dortmund (2nd)
Borussia Dortmund may be a big club, but the gap that exists between them and German giants Bayern Munich remains gargantuan and that could once again be on display on Saturday night when Die Schwarzgelben travel to Bavaria in the hopes of offering a moment of pause for Bayern who are on the cusp of their tenth-consecutive Bundesliga title. And the swath of injuries that have hit the Dortmund squad will not help their cause, with the likes of Gio Reyna, Gregor Köbel, Mats Hummels, Donyell Malen, and Mahmoud Dahoud all absent. With only periphery fitness concerns or Bayern and the motivation of home support that could see them crowned champions, Bayern should come out with a comfortable win given they have won each of their last six meetings against Dortmund while scoring at least three goals in five of those clashes.
VfL Bochum (12th) vs FC Augsburg (14th)
Similar form and data points clash in North-Rhine Westphalia when Bochum hosts Bavarian outfit Augsburg with both sides separated by just four points and looking to secure guaranteed Bundesliga safety for the 2022-23 campaign while the pair look to bounce back from losses last weekend. Bochum could perhaps feel confident on balance given the fact that they fought to a 3-2 away win in the reverse fixture while also keeping Leverkusen off the scoreboard in their recent 0-0 draw against the top four outfit, so the onus is likely on Augsburg here to change the narrative as they sit just four points clear of the bottom three after losing to Hertha last time out. Given their similarities, this could end in a draw.
Hertha BSC (15th) vs VfB Stuttgart (16th)
With just one loss in their last six Bundesliga fixtures (2-3-1), Stuttgart makes the jaunt to the German capital to clash with a disappointing Hertha side that has managed to find points in recent weeks with wins against Hoffenheim and Augsburg and may have turned the corner just enough to avoid automatic relegation to the 2.Bundesliga. This match has direct implications for both parties on Sunday with the loser dropping down – or staying in – 16th in the table. Die Alte Dame has managed just one win against Die Schwaben in their recent meetings (1-2-3), but a boost in confidence of late could close the gap in what could end up as a share of the spoils in Berlin.
